Sleep to Dream, Bass Line Station, Ottawa, ON, 6 May 2007

Sleep to Dream, Bass Line Station, Ottawa, ON, 6 May 2007, with opening act Nicknameless

I had never heard of this band until I saw them listed on Fibbers Music. For those who may not know Fibbers is the bar in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia that JD Fortune is part owner of now.

Anyway, being interested in JD, and by extension Pictou County, I listened to some of the tracks by the artists listed on the website. Sleep to Dream from Halifax immediately caught my eye. I liked what I heard, and got the Nervous Creatures EP.

They just released their first CD, Breaking the Silence, and did a small tour to support it. My hometown was the last city on the tour, and I went out last night to see them play. They rocked the almost non-existent audience. Towards the end of their set they were playing for me, my sister, the bar staff and the warm up band Nicknameless, and given how good this band is, that's quite sad. But they played like the house was full, and then thanked me for staying to the end to listen to them. They really must put something in the water in Nova Scotia. It reminded me of the stories INXS tells of doing the bar circuit early on in their career.

The Fibbers Music site has links to their Myspace where you can listen to more of their songs. They are doing another tour in early August and hope to go across Canada. I'll keep you posted.

An open letter to Mark Burnett & Company and CBS regarding the Rockstar: Supernova Finale

Words cannot express how peeved I am that we did not get to see the finale show properly. You butchered the editing of the finale so badly it’s hard to believe that the finished product came from esteemed television personnel. The smallest television station could have done a better job at producing the tripe you fed us.

You bored us with season highlights, then we did not get to see the bottom two performances, or at the very least cutting the rockers from four to three. You at least gave us the final three performances, albeit Lukas’s was cut off. And then we did not get to final two perform.

It was very disrespectful to both the viewers who watched all summer long, and the contestants. Why show so many season highlights if you were going to abbreviate the show to this extent? Did gremlins screw with your production facility? Did the footage you shot self combust? Did some idiot send out the wrong cut for broadcast?

I feel ripped off and cheated, and I expected far more from CBS and Mark Burnett Productions. You teased me all summer, and built up the finale in the preceding weeks. This was an extreme let down. I believe you owe us an apology.

I hate cockroaches more than I hate George Bush Jr. and the American administration. It came to me how much I hate them after I got really intoxicated celebrating JD Fortune's birthday last night.

I haven't updated this blog since the World Cup ended. Since then real life has been seriously kicking my ass. It's been an emotionally rough ride, and up until this week, my main sentiments were pretty much "Fire bad. Tree pretty." (I miss Buffy the Vampire Slayer). So there was no point in blogging, but I felt compelled to share my loathing of cockroaches.

I know as someone who studies anthropology, and has studied primate evolution, I should be fascinated by the seemingly non-mutation of the roach over the course of centuries. The skittering little pests annoy me to the point that I can't fully appreciate their biology or their interaction with their environment.

Many moons ago I had to obtain a pest control license to enable me to be present when treatments were conducted in the factory I worked at. I ended up getting the highest level I could achieve at the time, now the main class for pest control technicians in the province. I've studied insect, rodent, and bird control. I've had to dispose of mice, rats, and beetles. I've investigate a number of infestation of various vermin, but no matter how many times I encounter roaches, my skin just crawls.

About twenty-two years ago I lived in one place where it was routine to dodge the little f**kers upon entry into the kitchen in particular. It was a daily chore to work up enough nerve to go in there, but I did because I had no choice, and I couldn't afford to live anywhere else. Eventually we found the source of the infestation, an old stove in the basement, and it was discarded, and I slowly got back to being able to eat and have a cup of tea without being disturbed.

And once or twice over the twenty years I have lived in my apartment I have seen a few of them. Then, when I was having a particularly crappy day not too long ago, I went to perform my nightly check of the recycling and garbage room and when I turned on the light I saw something skitter past me. My heart started pounding, and it took a lot of effort to get me through the door to investigate. I didn't see anything else until two days later when I saw a number of them running over the garbage bins and the recycling containers. And each day I've seen a few more. Yesterday I only had to open the door and one came skittering out. I'm sure pest control treatments are in the works, but I've been having cockroach nightmares every night since I first saw them. I hate feeling vulnerable. And weak. I've fought against those feelings most of my life, and had to face up to many of my fears. But it takes a lot out of me.

If these new visitors set up camp for good in this building, which is aging and not being up-kept like it used to be, I'll be looking at moving after more than two decades of tenancy.

Now, if the roaches offered to pay part of the rent for using the space, or they could converse, sing, and dance like the ones in the movie Joe's Apartment, and could help me find true love, I might reconsider. Until then, I'm left with shivers and a feeling of dread when I see them. And a realization that there is something I hate more than Bush.

World Cup 09/07/06

Forza Azzurri!

I joined my sister and one of my nephews to watch the 2006 World Cup final on Corso Italia in Little Italy, just a few blocks from where I live. They are both Italia supporters, so it was the place to be on Sunday. It was fairly calm on the street before the match, as everyone hurried to find a spare inch of space to watch. Which was not easy given how many people had come downtown.

The experts had all hoped that there would be an early goal to get, and keep, the game going strong. We got two early goals, one for France on penalty kick, and a lovely header by Materazzi to even up the score.

I was sure Italy was going to score another one in regular time, but when we went to extra time, France seemed to be dominating. Until Zidane lost his cool and viciously head-butted Materazzi in the chest at the beginning of the second extra time period. He was sent off the field in disgrace, and had to walk past the World Cup trophy as he exited. I can imagine how he must have felt. After that, Italy picked up the steam again, but it ended up going to penalty shootout to decide the winner.

The Italians showed confidence when they stepped up to the spot. In my sister’s nightmare they would have to go to sudden-death penalty kicks, but Trezequet sent his off the underside of the cross bar, and Grosso executed his spot-kick with perfection giving Italy the win. The pub I was in exploded in a wall of noise when that ball hit the back of the net.

We never got to see the medal ceremony because the celebrations outside began immediately, but I watched most of the match again last night when I got home. As World Cup finals go it was a good one. My sister and I have been watching matches together for a long time, but it was special to share that experience with my thirteen year old nephew.

World Cup 08/07/06

The Germany vs Portugal third place match was much better than I thought it was going to be. It was nice to see Kahn playing this one, and as the team captain, since Ballack was out with an injury.

Germany had the better chances, but it wasn’t until the second half that we saw any goals. But what goals they were. The first goal by Schweinsteiger was lovely. Figo came on in the final fifteen minutes, and set up the lone Portuguese goal. It was a nice way for him to exit on the international stage.

Klinsmann helped restore some pride for the hosting nation. They were questioning his coaching abilities, and then they were praising him. I wonder if he’s going to stay on as head coach.

World Cup 05/07/06

The Portugal vs France semi-final match was not as entertaining as the one yesterday. I took a little satisfaction from the crowd continually booing Ronaldo. And I loved the commentators pointing out how easily the Portuguese seem to go down. Yeah. I hate that kind of play. I wish the players got taken to task more often for that kind of play.

Today though, the ref kept the play going quite well. And that was a good penalty kick call today, which resulted in Zidane’s well taken pk, and France going 1 up in the first half. The Portuguese had the better chances in the second-half, but just could not put the ball in the back of the net.

Thuram had a great game. The French are going to need him in top form for Sunday.

I thought it was a nice touch that after exchanging shirts with Figo, Zidane donned the jersey.
World Cup 04/07/06

The Germany vs Italy semi-final match was exceptionally entertaining. The first half saw some early chances by Italy, and then it was like a tennis match up and down the field as the ball went from goal to goal.

Klinsmann must have lit a fire under the Germans at half-time, because they came out attacking at the start of the second half. But still no goals were scored and the match went to over-time. By the end of the first period of over-time the Germans seemed content to take it to penalty kicks, knowing they had the advantage in that department. They never got that chance.

Two great goals in the final minutes of the second half of over-time secured Italy’s place in the World Cup final this coming Sunday, July 9. I was glad I didn’t have to endure another session of penalty kicks to decide who advanced.

World Cup 01/07/06

I picked England to advance from this match up, and I knew this was going to be a physical game. I thought with a few key Portuguese players sitting out on suspension, they might have a better chance. They did capitalize on that advantage, but England had a few wasted opportunities as the players at the front seemed to battle with each other. Eriksson must have delivered “We band of brothers” speech at half-time, because England came out attacking full-force in the second half. It was very sad to see Beckham limp off the field, and see him on the bench in tears. It was also sad when Rooney was sent off with a red card for a push on Ronaldo after a foul on another player. The foul resulted in a misplaced boot, but there was pushing and shoving by the Portuguese on either side of Rooney too. Figo can head butt an opposing player and only receive a yellow card, but Rooney gets sent off. That just sucks. And the dramatics of the Portuguese rubs me the wrong way. Their play-acting is annoying as hell. Writhing in agony on the field one moment, and then up and running moments later. Carvalho and Ronaldo are particularly adept at this, which is a shame.

The idea of going to penalty kicks made me sick in the stomach, since England’s has lost on pks before. I could barely watch. I kept hoping Lampard would be able to score a goal in this World Cup. I felt so bad for him when Ricardo stopped his pk. But at least he wasn’t the only won who got a pk stopped. Hargreaves had a good game though, and I was glad he scored on his pk. It was touching to watch Beckham go around and comfort his comrades at the end of the match. This match was the first surprise of the day.

I fully expected France to be dominated by Brazil the entire match long. Again, I underestimated the French defence. And the French offense. The Brazilians are another team that is adept at securing free kicks due to supposed fouls. Like the second half dive by Ronaldo that resulted in Thuram getting a yellow card. Thuram didn’t touch him. Arrgh. I just hate that kind of play. And I hope FIFA reviews the videos and fines Ronaldo for that stunt. The last few minutes were exciting as both sides had some good chances, and France was the surprise winner to go through to the semi-finals.

World Cup 30/06/06

I thought the Germany vs Argentina match might be a bit of a hit and miss. The match started out with high energy, then stalled after the first 15 minutes. The second half started slowly, but as soon as Argentina scored the goal the match came alive again. The one thing I really dislike about the Argentinians is how adept they are at drawing fouls, especially Riquelme. I hate that kind of play. Things heated up again at 70 minutes when the Argentinian keeper Abbondanzieri collided with Klose and had to be replaced. Then there was more drama when Klose’s header tied the game up. As the last minutes of the second over-time period ticked down, it looked like this match was going to penalty kicks to decide who went through to the semi-finals, and I knew the Germans were likely to go through. They stepped up to take the pks with much more confidence, and won 4-2 on penalities. Well done to Lehmann for stopping those 2 balls. It was unfortunate that there was a little melee on the field at the end of the match though.

When Italy met the Ukraine for a friendly match before the World Cup began, the game ended in a draw, so I didn’t know what to expect. The early goal by Italy buoyed their team, and they were able to get two more goals quite easily. Italy always seems to be able to hold onto a lead, and their solid defence was able to keep the Ukrainians off the score board.

World Cup 27/06/06

While Ghana has played well, I was convinced that Brazil would easily beat them. Ghana came to life on the pitch after the first Brazilian goal, but seemed to loose some steam after the second one, which should not have counted because Brazil was clearly offside. Brazil played the remainder of the game as if they were happy to keep their two goal lead, and got the third goal when the Ghana defence was absent from the box. So Brazil is off to the quarter-finals, and Ronaldo becomes the record holder for the most number of goals scored at the World Cup to date.

If I had any money I would have put it on Spain to leave France in the dust. It’s a good thing I didn't bet on this match. In the final 10 minutes, France got two goals, to add to the one they already had, to secure their advancement to the quarter-finals.

World Cup 26/06/06

I knew the Italy vs Australia match was going to be exciting. I figured if the Australians could score early, they might just keep the advantage. And there was a huge Aussie crowd in the stands to cheer on the Socceroos. The Aussies came out with winning on their mind, and they had 80% ball possession in the first 10 minutes. Unfortunately while Australia out played Italy, and dominated numerically, they just could not capitalize on the advantage. Both teams had a key player out on injury (Nesta and Kewell), and both had a player out on suspension (De Rossi and Emerton). The Australians really missed Emerton in the starting line up. When Materazzi was sent off for a tackle five minutes into the second-half, it seemed to shake the Italians up a bit. A dodgy penalty kick call in the final seconds of regular play saw the Italians take the lead when Totti struck the ball firmly into the net. From my point of view Neill tried to play the ball and went down and Grosso tripped over his prostrate body. That’s not worthy of a penalty kick to me, but the ref saw differently, and the Italians are off to the quarter-finals.

I expected the Swiss to best the Ukraine in this match-up. Coming in to this group of 16 match Switzerland was the only team to have not conceded a goal in the group stage. The match started out slowly and never really picked up in pace, with both sides playing more like this was a friendly between countries than a second round World Cup match. As the minutes ticked down in the second over time period, it became increasingly clear that this was going to be the first game to go to penalty kicks to decide who moved on. The Swiss will be replaying the horror of missing 3 penalty kicks in their dreams for a long time, and the Ukraine advances to the quarter-finals.

World Cup 25/06/06

I predicted a modest win for England in the match against Ecuador, and that’s what we got. The heat on the pitch favoured the Ecuadoreans, and the English had a problem at right back and they had a packed midfield that didn’t seem to work as well as in past matches. But, that was a beautiful free kick that Beckham put into the back of the net.

I suspected that the more experience Portuguese team would best the Netherlands. But I was not expecting the drama we got in this match. The Dutch had a technical advantage, but they could not score. First Ronaldo went off injured, then the Portuguese were dealt another blow when a man was sent off just before the half. The second half got really nasty and we got one of the saddest debacles in soccer history when the pitch of supposed professionals became a volatile playground where school boys pushed and shoved one another. I think it all started when Figo headed butted one of the Dutch and only received a yellow card, rather than being shown a red card. Then a Dutchman received a second yellow card, and was sent off shortly after for elbowing Figo in a tackle. I think the player was just getting even with Figo for the head butt. Then we got a series of red and yellow cards handed out for tackles and pushes. In total this match saw 12 players booked, and four sent off. I’m wondering if FIFA is going to issue a suspension for Figo. England must be thinking that this battered Portuguese side will be easier to beat in the quarter-finals.

World Cup 24/06/06

My money was on Germany comfortably winning the match against Sweden, because the Swedes just don’t seem to be in top form this year. The Germans dominated this match, attacking the Swiss with a fury. If Lucic hadn’t been sent off, and Larsson had made that penalty kick, it might have been a different game.

I picked Argentina to move forward to the quarter-finals, but anticipated that Mexico would make it difficult going. And that is exactly the way it played out. Both teams played well, and this was a very exciting and balanced match, the first to be taken into extra time. I was hoping the Mexicans would be able to tie the game up to take it to penalty kicks.

World Cup 23/06/06

This was the final day of first round play, and I was looking forward to seeing who the remaining final 16 teams would be.

The Saudi Arabia vs Spain match was dominated by the Spanish reserve side, although the Saudis came forward a number of times, and the Saudi keeper Mabrouk made some great saves. The only goal by the Spanish was the result of a lovely header.

The Ukraine vs Tunisia match was an ebb and flow from end to end, until a Tunisian was sent off just before half time. After that, the Ukrainians seemed to push forward more often, but only got one goal, a dodgy penalty kick call. To me it looked like the Ukrainian tripped over his own feet in the end.

The Koreans had a slight advantage on shots, and shots on goals, but just could not score against Switzerland. This was a very physical game, with 10 yellow cards being handed out, 5 a side. A lovely header resulted in the first Swiss goal, and a second goal guaranteed the Swiss would go through to the next round in first place in their group.

It was only a matter of time before France scored in their match against Togo. They dominated from start to finish, and got two goals to see them go through in second place in their group.

World Cup 22/06/06

The Czech Republic vs Italy match was a battle of the midfield. The first half saw the Czech Republic push forward, and the Italians lost Nesta on injury before the 20th minute. Just at half time the sending off of a Czech player for a tackle seemed to rattle them, and they lost steam in the second half just as the Italian midfield tightened up. There was not a single defender to be seen when Inzaghi scored the second Italian goal to guarantee Italy through to the next round.

The Hydro was off here during the Ghana vs USA match, so I didn’t get to see the whole 90 minutes of play. The first goal by Ghana was a lovely one, but the penalty kick at half time to put them up 2:1 over the USA seemed a bit of a harsh call.

I expected Brazil to dominate the match against Japan. The Japanese goal was a nice one, but then they allowed the Brazilians through to score 4 goals. And Ronaldo finally scored his first goals of this World Cup.

The Croatia vs Australia match was rife with drama. I was hoping the Australians would dazzle us with their skills. But the replacement Aussie keeper let in the first Croatian goal within the first few minutes of the game, and I just knew this was going to be a hellish game for me to watch. A penalty kick for hand ball resulted in the Aussies tying up the match before half time. Moore put that one straight down the centre! Not too far into the second half the Aussie keeper fumbled and let in a second goal, but, with a little more than 10 minutes of regular time left, Kewell scored to make it 2:2. Then insanity reined supreme and even the British ref Graham Poll just about lost control of the match. At one point there were two balls on the pitch at the same time, a ball that clearly crossed the line was ruled out as an Australian goal, and a series of bad tackles in the final minutes saw 2 Croatians and one Aussie being sent off after they received second yellow cards.

World Cup 21/06/06

Hand balls in the penalty area, by both sides, a missed penalty kick, and a sending off made for a very exciting and feisty match between the Portuguese B team and Mexico. The Portuguese showed finesse in finishing, and won their third match in the first round.

The Iran vs Angola match promised to be an interesting because if Angola could score a few goals and win, they could unseat Mexico from advancing to the second round. We did not get any goals scored until the last 30 minutes of the match, which ended in a draw, with both sides going home.

Coté D’Ivoire vs Serbia and Montenegro was another game of pride, since neither country could advance into the second round. Three goals in the first 45 minutes upped the level of excitement to start the second half. And we got S&M conceding two penalty kicks because of handball by the same player in both instances. This was so much more exciting than the Netherlands vs Argentina match.

I was hoping for a more lively match between the Netherlands and Argentina as they battled for first place in Group C. The Argentinians had the advantage of goal differential in the event of a draw, but anything could have happened. There was some early pressure from the Dutch, then some close shots from the Argentineans, and then the game fizzled somewhat. Van Der Sar had a little more work to do than his counterpart, but it ended in a 0-0 result. Oh, and the much touted Messi gets his first start.

World Cup 20/06/06

The Germans dominated the match against Ecuador, who showed up but lost their concentration in the first few minutes. The Ecuadoreans seemed satisfied to coast into the second round, which would happen regardless of the outcome of this game. The Germans didn’t have to strain themselves to win by a considerable margin. And that third German goal by Podolski was a lovely one.

Costa Rica vs Poland was a game of recouping pride. Poland wanted it more.

Paraguay vs Trinidad & Tobago was another good match. The Soca Warriors played a good game, especially in the second half, but a late goal by Cuevas gave Paraguay the win.

I knew that England was going to come out guns blazing against Sweden because they didn’t want to face Germany in the next round. The first English goal by Cole was lovely, reminiscent of the kind Beckham used to net. Watching Owen crumble down with that knee injury in the second minute of play made me think about JD and how much pain he has been in since injuring his knee onstage in Saskatoon. Owen ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament and is out of the competition. The English defence seemed to struggle in the second half. I guess they didn’t get the “we band of brothers” speech in the locker room. The last few minutes of the match were nail-biting for me.

Monday, June 19, 2006

World Cup 19/06/06

Togo vs Switzerland was a fair match of two teams that played quite well. The Swiss could just finish up, but there were fleeting moments when Togo shone.

I expected the Urkaine to dominate in the match against Saudi Arabia, but I also expected the Saudis to put on a better display. There was some great officiating, with the English ref Graham Poll having good control of the match.

In the Spain vs Tunisia match, a rainy pitch, and a surprise early goal by the Tunisians gave Spain a run for their money. The Spanish dominated in ball possession, shots, and shots on goal, but Tunisia shut down their offense until late in the game when Spain rebounded.

World Cup 18/06/06

I was hoping for a low scoring draw between Japan and Croatia, to better Australia’s chance of advancing. I got it. One of the most exciting moments for me was when the Japanese keeper Kawaguchi saved Srna's penalty kick. While it was another 0-0 match, it was entertaining.

My sister and I rearranged our Father's Day gathering to be able to watch the Brazil vs Australia match without interruption. I expected the Brazilians to win the match, but the Australians played well. They just could not follow through in the end. They had so many chances that just fizzled out. Hopefully they will be back in the swing of things on June 22 when they play their final first round match against Croatia.

The French have been having trouble for a while now. The match against Korea just added to their problems. When I watched the slow-motion replay of the shot at the 30th minute by Patrick Vieira, the ball looks like it completely crossed the line, but it was ruled out. If that goal had stood, this might have been a different match. Hats off to the Koreans for their persistence, and their fans who never wavered in support of their team.

World Cup 17/06/06

Portugal vs Iran was more dynamic than I thought it was going to be. On paper Portugal should have easily won this match, but it wasn’t until well into the second half when they scored, and it was a penalty kick in the 80th minute that guaranteed them the win.

The Czech Republic vs Ghana match gave us the first missed penalty kick of World Cup 2006, and the earliest goal we’ve seen so far. The first half was dominated by Ghana, but the second half got spicier as both teams were looking for a goal, and both keepers were having a good match. Ghana played the superior offensive game and got a well deserved win.

While I knew the USA would be looking to salvage some pride, it was clear to me the Italians were poised to kick their ass. Unfortunately the game had little flow due to the number of fouls committed and the number of offsides. And then after the own goal by Zaccardo tied the game, things got ugly with De Rossi elbowing McBride, giving him a bloody face, and he was sent off as a result. Then the American Mastroeni was sent off after a tackle. And in the second half Pope was sent off after receiving his second yellow card in the match. There were some bad tackles, but the Italians are also known for milking the situation with their dramatics. The Uruguayan ref obviously did not have control of the match. I hope FIFA is truly reviewing the conduct of the refs.

World Cup 16/06/06

I suspected that Argentina would easily best Serbia and Montenegro. I just didn’t think the domination would begin so early or that it would be such a high scoring match. S&N just could not find a way to shut down the Argentine midfield. Dick Howard called this match a “clinic on finishing” and I couldn’t have said it any better. It was nice to see Argentina field Messi.

I knew that Netherland vs Côte d’Ivoire was going to be an exciting match up. Both sides are playing well, but the Dutch were a little stronger offensively. I thought that with three corners in a row in the last moments of the game that CIV might just score. But hats off to both teams for a match well played.

I thought Mexico was going to win this match by a decisive margin. I was wrong. Congrats to the Angolans for holding the Mexicans to a scoreless draw.

World Cup 15/06/06

I was hoping for a much more entertaining game between Ecuador and Costa Rica. While ball possession was 50/50, the Costa Ricans just could not follow through. With this win by Ecuador, the two teams advancing from Group A have already been decided before the third match takes place. On June 20, Ecuador will face off against Germany, to decide who will take first place in the group. On the same day, Costa Rica will play Poland, and both of these teams will be looking for a win to garner some pride before returning home.

I was disappointed with the England vs Trinidad and Tobago match. The Brits dominated the ball possesson but they just did not have any flow to their game, and the T & T defense was doing a good job. In addition, Owen did not impress much in the match. It was good to see Rooney play though. I was sure the game was going to end in a draw, but once the Brits score, they tend to come to life.

I was even more disappointed in the Sweden vs Paraguay match. The Swedes are having a performing poorly this time around. They just squeaked through with that goal in the final moments of the second half. And with the number of yellow cards being handed out to Paraguan players in the first five minutes, I thought for sure one of them would end up being sent off during the match. I'm glad they settled into playing the match.

And finally, I just want to say how much I love the Adidas ad that runs during the matches, where the 2 kids are picking sides for their game in the village square. It captures a child's imagination wonderfully. Who wouldn't want to play with the likes of Beckham, Lampard, Robben, Zidane, Kaka, Cissé, Riquelme, Ballack, Kuranyi, Kahn, and even Beckenbauer.

World Cup 14/06/06

Spain vs Ukraine was a very one sided game. And the Swiss ref made a very harsh call to send off Vashchuk and award Spain a penalty kick. That little tug on the shorts of Torres should have been a foul outside the box, resulting in a free kick, and maybe a yellow card. It was the ref's first ever match at this level, and it shows. Is FIFA that desparate for officials? With this win, and the number of goals scored, Spain is in good spirits to take on Tunisia, then Saudi Arabia. They will more than likely take first place in Group H.

Tunisia vs Saudi Arabia was a great game between two teams who finished up at the top of their groups in qualifying. I favoured the Saudis, but a last minute goal in overtime in the second half resulted in a draw. These teams will be interesting to watch in their next two matches, because they will both want to secure a place in the next round. Interestingly, another fan managed to make in onto the pitch to disrupt play. Security better tighen up before they have an incident.

After the first two matches, Germany vs Poland was less than stellar. The Germans did not play as well as I thought they were going to. They had trouble following through, and the Polish keeper was in good form. However, with the last minute goal by Neuville, Germany will more than likely be advancing to the next round.

World Cup 13/06/06

The Korea vs Togo game was very entertaining, and had some good officiating.

I still can't believe that the France and Switzerland ended in a scoreless draw. I'm sure the French still don't believe it.

I was hoping Brazil and Croatia would tie so that Australia would be alone at the top of the table with 3 points. But it was a good game. I do wonder though with all the “enhanced” security at the Cup, how that Croatian supporter managed to amble onto the pitch and delay the match.

World Cup 12/06/06

I've enjoyed all the matches played to date, but today was some amazing football! Congrats to the Aussies on your win! You played well guys! That Japanese goal should not have been allowed. It was obvious that Takahara interfered with Schwarzer. But you bounced back, leaving that disappointment in the dust. Good onya.

And the Czech Republic played an outstanding game.

World Cup Fever!

Hello. My name is Ember. It's been 21 days since my last INXS gig.

Thank goodness the World Cup has started because I needed a distraction from my INXS concert withdrawal.
